State Line U.M. Church invites you to hear the heart-warming testimony and musical artistry of Duncan Holmes. Blind from birth, Duncan was involved with music throughout his education. He received music degrees from Shenandoah University and the University of North Texas. He tours the U.S. performing and sharing his story at churches, schools, and prisons, and has appeared on the 700 Club. Duncan will be in concert at the State Line United Methodist Church on July 27 at 6:00 PM. There will be a time of snacks and fellowship following the concert.

 

This event will be held at Chambersburg First Baptist Church, 741 S. Coldbrook Ave., Chambersburg, PA.  The speaker will be James Smith from the PA Prison Society.  The meal will catered by Antrim House.  Donation for meal $20.  Entertainment will be the Hetrick Family Singers.  For more information, contact John Rauch 717-262-0842.  Reservations are due August 12th. 

 

Asbury United Methodist Woman is sponsoring a trip to the 2008 Infinite Grace Women of Faith Conference September 12th and 13th at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. Come join us for a faith filled weekend. The bus will leave Asbury church parking lot on Friday, September 12 at approximately 4:15 AM. We plan to arrive back at Asbury between 10 – 11 PM on Saturday. We  have 11 tickets available. The cost of the trip is $245.00 made payable to Asbury UMW. Included in the cost is the pre-conference on Friday, breakfast on Saturday, main conference on Saturday, lunch on Friday and Saturday, hotel and bus fare. “Lay Speaking Ministry” & “Serving From the Heart” taught by Pastor Deborah Westbrook.  This is a Basic Lay Speaker’s Class with an emphasis on discovering your spiritual gifts and implementing them in the local church.

The classes will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA.  Traveling from Route 30, turn north onto 5th Ave., continue to Norland Ave. and turn right at light, church entrance is on right-hand side.  Traveling from I-81, get off Exit 17 (Walker Rd.).  Turn right at light onto Norland Ave., Continue to church entrance on the left-hand side.
 
Cost $30.00.  This includes registration, snacks, books, and materials.   Lunch will be on your own. There are several restaurants nearby.  Students who may have a financial hardship are encouraged to inquire if their local church will sponsor them or contact Deborah Westbrook (717) 776-3444 directly to discuss scholarship status.  

Before class, students will need to do reading in preparation for the first session and also have discussed lay speaking in the local church with his/her pastor.  Books may be picked up at the District Office or mailed to you if you are unable to get to the District Office.

     The Friends of Neighborhood Center Organization is seeking support in the sale of tickets ($20.00).

For years the Friends sponsored a play at Totem Pole Playhouse.  The cost of the tickets became too expensive to make a profit.  It was decided to try the “Playless Play” much like a foodless food sale.  The tickets are $20 or any amount of donation you would care to make.  Contact Doris Sheldon for more information 717-762-4668.

4.  CENTRAL PA CONFERENCE UKRAINE INITIATIVE

The Central PA Conference Ukraine Initiative is in the midst of its 15th year of ministry and outreach in Ukraine. One current area of the Initiative's focus is to provide Bible study and Sunday School materials in the Russian language for the Istochnik UM Church and for the Cerebral Palsy Center, both serving Kyiv, the capital city. This is just one of the ministries which your congregation may support. To reach out to help our sisters and brothers in Ukraine understand more about God's compassion and love, you may send your donations to:

 EVENTS HAPPENING OUTSIDE THE DISTRICT

1.  IMPACT ‘08

Mark your calendars: Impact '08 will be held at Camp Greene Hills from Wednesday, July 30 to Saturday, August 2. We hope you can join us for this engaging four day outdoor event.  For more information, contact Stephen Gallaher at sgallahersnl@aol.com.

 

The 2008 Leadership Summit sponsored by the Willowcreek Association is scheduled for August 7-8.   This event is provided by satellite simulcast at many locations including Manheim, PA (near Lancaster).   This is one of the least expensive ways available to learn from top leaders in the church and in the secular world.    Check it out at www.willowcreek.com/summit.

 

3.  LEADERSHIP UNIVERSITY - FALL  2008 DATES

The State College Campus of Leadership University will offer the following courses on October 24-25, 2008 at Faith UMC, Bellefonte, PA.

 BASIC LAY SPEAKING:  This course is designed to prepare persons for leadership in the local church, as well as for preaching sermons.  The instructor may require an extra Saturday to complete the requirements. – Instructor:  TBA

HEBREWS: Hebrews was written to a Christian Community touched by persecution. This letter advises Christians everywhere, including today, to trust God when the way is difficult.  These chapters contain many memorable verses that can guide us in our journey of faith.  – Instructor:  Bishop Neil Irons

 THE DISCIPLINE OF PRAYER: Explore the spiritual discipline of prayer in its many forms and uses.  Learn how to pray and how to develop a prayer life, as well as teaching others to develop this discipline. – Instructor:  TBA

MISCELLANOUS ITEMS

 

 The Internal Revenue Service has announced an increase in the standard mileage rates for the final six month of 2008. The rate will increase to 58.5 cents a mile for all business miles driven from July 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008. This represents an increase of eight cents (8) cents from the 50.5 cent rate in effect for the first six months of 2008.

Thanks to many of you, Computer Ministry, Inc. is beginning to fill its shelves with donated computers.  In the first two weeks of the appeal, you have brought in about 50 PCs to us for refurbishment or recycling.  And we know the QuikLink is the source of this, because you're mentioning it when you drop off the equipment.
  
Our next Recycle Day is Saturday, August 9th, but you needn't wait that long. If you have a PC you aren't using and want to dispose of, please bring it by now. We are in the Mission Central building, 5 Pleasant View Dr, Mechanicsburg, PA. Our website is www.compministry.org, our e-mail is: computerministry@comcast.net and our phone is 717.766.6373. We are open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:30 am till 4:00 pm, but if you can't make it on those days, Mission Central will accept PC donations for us any day they are open (Mon-Sat). If you wish, we can give you a donation acknowledgement for tax purposes. Please stop by and visit us when you volunteer at Mission Central.

 

3.   FULL-TIME ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT POSITION OPEN IN CONFERENCE FINANCE OFFICE

A full-time position as the Administrative Assistant for Payables is now open. A background in accounting, computer and communication skills are essential. Interested persons should submit their resume to the Conference Treasurer, Zedna Haverstock, at PO Box 2053, Mechanicsburg, PA  17055. You may request a full job description by e-mail (zedna@cpcumc.org). Deadline for accepting resumes is July 18,  2008.
